Brief Overview

Islam is categorized as a monotheistic religion with a couple of subsections of the religion. There are two main sects of the Islamic faith these being Shia and Sunni, but there are other sects like Ibadi. The holy book for Islam is the Quran and the holy language is Arabic. The followers of Islam are called Muslims, which means in Arabic, "one who submits to God".  The Islamic faith has core tenants that are the foundation of their believe system these being the 5 pillars of Islam, some sects have up to ten pillars depending on the sect, these pillars are Zakat, Sawm, Hajj, Shahadah, and Salah. 

  • Zakat

    The obligation to give a portion of one's wealth to charity, usually 2.5% of annual income. 

  • Sawm

    The practice of fasting from sunrise to sunset during the month of Ramadan. 

  • Hajj

    The pilgrimage to Mecca, the holy city of Islam, to perform rituals that follow the order of the Prophet Muhammad's last pilgrimage. Muslims who are able and financially secure are expected to make this pilgrimage at least once in their lives

  • Shahadah

    The declaration of faith, which states "There is no God but God (Allah), and Muhammad is His Messenger". Muslims must recite this statement three times in front of witnesses to become a Muslim. 

  • Salah

    The ritual of praying five times a day. Prayers include Fajr at dawn, Zuhr at midday, Asr in the late afternoon, Maghrib after sunset, and Isha until midnight. Before each prayer, Muslims perform wudhu, or ablution, to purify themselves.
