The Battle of Mobile Bay was a land and Sea engagement that resulted in a strategic victory for the Union. The various engagements apart of this battle started on August 2nd and conclude on August 23rd, 1864. The battle involved a fairly substantial Union naval fleet of four ironclad monitors, two gunboats, and a dozen wooden ships facing off against one Confederate ironclad and three wooden ships. The Confederates also had forts along the bay and a portion of the bay was mined to prevent union access. The battle and subsequent fall of Mobile Bay was important because it was the last open port the confederacy had, thus crippling the already strained confederate economy. The total combatants for this battle was 7,000 with 5,500 Union and 1,500 Confederate sailors/soldiers taking part. The casualties for the engagement totaled to 1,822 with 322 Union casualties and 1,500 Confederate casualties.
