Brief Overview

Buddhism is categorized as a non-theistic relgion, this means that the religion does not have a creator god or deity to worship. Buddhists believe that human life is a revolving cycle of suffering and rebirth, but that if one achieves a state of nirvana, it is possible to escape this cycle forever. The first person the Buddhist believe to achieve this state was Siddhartha Gautama who is known today as Buddha. The holy book for Buddhism is The Tripitaka and the followers of Buddhism are called Buddhists. The religion has multiple sacred languages with these being, Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, and Tibetan. The basic beliefs of Buddhism are the Four Noble Truths which are, Magga; the truth of the path to the end of suffering, dukkha; the truth of suffering, samudaya the truth of the cause of suffering, and nirodha; the truth of the end of suffering.
